What is a good friend?

Friends are an important part of most people’s lives.
A good friend might make me laugh and cry, but most importantly of all, she is always beside me when I am happy as well as when I am sad, both when I succeed and when I fail.
Good friendship is based on trust. A good friend is both trustworthy and reliable. Especially, she has to be honest and tell me what she really thinks.
A good friend is a person who is always willing to listen rather than just talk; who can share my troubles as well as my pleasures; who can be there no matter what the situation is; who is always be my side to deal with my difficulties and challenges.

Good essay, Mixcat. But there are some minor problems. I think you require of your good friend quite much. “…who is always be my side to deal with my difficulties and challenges…”: nobody can be always beside you. “…Especially, she has to be honest and tell me what she really thinks…”: sometimes, if it is not harmful to you, your good friend will not tell you what she/he really thinks; i think using “has to” here is not very suitable because you do not talk about obligation, you talk about friendship. A question: in your opinion, what are the differences between ‘alter ego’ and ‘good friend’? Finally, i think you should use ’she/he’ instead of ’she’ because there is not distinction of age and sex in friendship.
Good luck!
I really like your definition about a good friend , but so ideal and i think it’s hard to find her/him . I totally agree w/ you about that is a necessary quality which a good friend should have
. Luckily, I think I have found them in 10 years we’re friends , How about you ? By the way, I think your meaning words so nice and meaningful.
